Cashmere Emergency News: 20 June 2013 - heavy snow forecast
Greetings residents and subscribers,
With the forecast heavy snowstorm due, the temperature has been dropping.
It is timely that we update you on the community plan in place to ensure your well-being should weather or other emergency strike.
Cashmere Community Emergency Response Plan (civil defence preparation - by our community, for our community)
Having water, food, a gas barbeque or camping cooker, torch, radio, dry clothing and warmth to last you up to three days in your home is recommended. Ref.
http://www.ccc.govt.nz/homeliving/civildefence/bereadygetthru.aspx. Include food for any household pets.
With city council support, arrangement has been made to open a community emergency hub if required. That is, if you don't have supplies or are cold or need assurance, or can't reach someone located elsewhere, please go to Cashmere Presbyterian Church Centre, corner of Macmillan Avenue and Dyers Pass Road; phone 332-7129. But don't go out in snow unless you really have to - stay safe.
The signal that the hub is opening will be if Dyers Pass Road closes at the foot of the hill, or electricity goes out, for an extended period (six hours / two or more mealtimes). We are able to work together and resolve any request for help from the hub location: coordinating volunteers, catering, communication and door-knocking.
Look out for each other, especially the most vulnerable.
It may be that this storm misses us, but the warning can be made useful for improving our response systems. Note the "Largest snowfall in decades in south" http://www.radionz.co.nz/news/national/138087/largest-snowfall-in-decades-in-south. Official notices: regional and city.
CRA is working to assist response hub preparation for every neighbourhood in and around Cashmere.
Those interested in city preparedness may like to attend the Civil Defence Emergency Management Volunteers talk at 7pm, Wednesday 26 June, First Floor Function Room Civic Offices, 53 Hereford Street, Christchurch.
Stay warm and keep in touch.
